The very first English clay pipes are dated between 1600-1625 and were very tiny. The reason for this is that tobacco was extremely expensive. As tobacco became more easily available, the pipe bowls became larger. For centuries, England was the leader of the design of the clay pipe. Later the French companies of Gamber and Fiolet started to produce more elaborate examples. These would include grotesque skulls, animal faces, figurals such as Napoleon, Victoria and other notables. Most were decorated with coloured enamels.
